Did you know that today, Wednesday 24 October is UN Day? external image united-nations-day-posters.jpg
During today's PSHCE lesson time you will be working in House teams thinking about 'rights' and the role of the UN in establishing and protecting human rights.
Each House will prepare and give a short presentation during P3 to all the Lower School students in the Theatre, which will be judged by the Deputy Head Pastoral and House Coordinator.
The best presentation will then win the competition.

Tasks:
1. Have a 2 minute discussion on what rights are.

2. ‘A colony is to be established on Planet X, an ‘Earth-like’ planet in the Gamma quadrant. You are lucky to have been chosen for this exciting new life! Your colony has the initial task of drawing up a code of rights for everyone on the planet. This will be done in several stages.’

Stage 1 - Journey through space

You are now in hyper-isolation (you cannot communicate with anyone else!).
On the piece of paper you are given draw up a personal list of ten essentials that you feel you need for your new life. These might be practical things you will need to survive, but they could also be ideas about how life on the new planet is to be organised. You should rank their list in order, with ‘1’ as the most important.

Stage 2 - In planetary orbit

Whilst circling Planet X you meet up with a fellow traveller. Share your list of essentials with a partner and agree on a shared list of ten rights. You should note down your reasons for deciding what to include and what to leave out and keep these lists for later reference.

Stage 3 - On landing

Now that you have landed on the new planet, you should join with another pair and agree a common list of ten rights.

Stage 4 - Colony meeting

Now the whole group should join together and agree on a common statement of ten rights. Everyone must be happy before final decisions are made. Type the list onto a PPT slide which everyone can refer to. Explain that it will now become the responsibility of the whole colony to make sure that these rights are maintained.

Did you know that on December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Follow the link to a simplified version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Look for similarities between your list of rights and the ones in the document. Type the similarities onto a new PPT slide.

Finally choose an additional 'right' from the link, to add to your original ten by means of suggestions/voting. Type this on a new slide and give the reasons why you have chosen it.

You will need to choose up to 3 students to give a 3 minute presentation to the rest of the Lower School during P3 in the Theatre.
You must share your 10 rights and explain the reasoning behind each.
You must identify the similarities between your list and the UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
You must share which new right you will also adopt and why you chose it.

E-mail you completed presentation to susan.hobkinson@dulwich-shanghai.

Please ensure you are in the Theatre by 10:15am for a 10:20am start.

Presenters will sit on the stage and the rest will sit in assigned House Group areas.

Happy United Nations Day!
